This is the cornerstone of the publisher path in the Backlink Marketplace. It introduces the end-to-end process of offering publishing opportunities โ€” space for sponsored or contributed content โ€” through the marketplace, from eligibility to payouts. It is the first article in the publisher sequence (articles 91โ€“98) and connects to the buyer path through The Backlink Marketplace Buyer's Guide.

What a publisher is

A publisher is a site owner or editor who offers publishing opportunities through the marketplace. The publisher maintains editorial control: they review, approve, or reject placements, set prices, and ensure compliance with marketplace policy and Google's guidelines. See Publisher Eligibility in the Backlink Marketplace.

Editorial control

Editorial control is the publisher's right to review every placement and reject those that do not meet their standards. This is not optional โ€” it is a condition of marketplace participation. A publisher who publishes anything submitted without review risks quality degradation and policy violations. See Editorial Control for Marketplace Publishers.

Pricing and commission

Publishers set their own prices for publishing opportunities. The marketplace applies a commission on each completed placement. Price according to the site's topical authority, audience, and editorial effort โ€” not according to a link metric. See Publisher Pricing and Marketplace Commission.

Disclosure and link attributes

Compensated placements must be disclosed and must use the correct link attribute. Google requires paid links that pass PageRank to be qualified with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". See Sponsored Content Disclosure Requirements and Link Attribute Guidance.

What this guide does not do

  • It does not promise earnings, traffic, or authority from any placement.
  • It does not describe how to sell dofollow links that pass PageRank in violation of Google's guidelines.
  • It does not endorse networks designed to evade detection.
