Local Keyword Research Checklist
Seed terms, modifiers, intent mapping, and prioritization.
Keyword research for local SEO differs from general keyword research because geography limits the results. This checklist covers how to research local keywords systematically. See Understanding Search Intent for Local Queries for intent mapping.
Seed terms and modifiers
- List core services as seed terms
- Add location modifiers (city, neighborhood, 'near me')
- Add intent modifiers ('hire', 'cost', 'best', 'emergency')
- Brainstorm question-based queries (who, what, where, how, why)
Expand and validate
- Use Google autocomplete and 'People also ask' for expansion
- Check related searches at the bottom of SERPs
- Validate search volume with a keyword tool
- Check Search Console for queries already triggering impressions
- Identify striking-distance keywords (see Striking Distance Keywords)
Prioritize
- Map each keyword to a search intent
- Assign each keyword to a target page (or flag for new content)
- Prioritize by relevance, volume, and conversion potential
- Flag cannibalization risks (multiple pages targeting the same query)
