Domain and DNS Management for Local Portfolios
Domain registration, DNS, and renewal management for multi-site portfolios.
Domain and DNS management is the infrastructure layer of website operations. For multi-site portfolios, centralizing domain management prevents orphaned or expired domains. This guide covers domain registration, DNS, and renewal management. See Website Operations for Local Businesses for the operational context.
Domain registration
- Register domains with a reputable registrar.
- Enable auto-renew to prevent accidental expiration.
- Use a centralized account for portfolio management.
- Track renewal dates in a calendar or dashboard.
DNS management
DNS (Domain Name System) maps domain names to IP addresses. DNS records include A records (point to a server), CNAME records (alias to another domain), MX records (email), and TXT records (verification). Keep DNS records documented and use a DNS provider with fast propagation.
| Record type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| A | Points a domain to an IP address |
| CNAME | Aliases one domain to another |
| MX | Directs email to a mail server |
| TXT | Verification and policy records |
