Understanding Impressions, CTR, and Position
What impressions, CTR, and position measure and their limits.
Impressions, CTR, and position are the three core Search Console metrics. Understanding what each measures โ and its limits โ prevents misinterpretation. See Reading Search Console Performance Reports for how to use them together.
Impressions
An impression is counted when a URL appears in a search result that the user could see without scrolling. If a URL appears in a result the user scrolled past, it may not count. Impressions measure visibility, not engagement.
Click-through rate (CTR)
CTR is clicks divided by impressions. A high CTR means the snippet (title, URL, description) is compelling. A low CTR with high impressions means the snippet is not attracting clicks โ improve the title tag and meta description.
Average position
Position is the average ranking of a URL across all impressions. It is not a precise rank for a specific query โ it averages across queries, locations, and devices. A URL in position 5 on average might rank 1 for one query and 20 for another.
