Device Performance Gaps in Local Search
Mobile vs. desktop performance gaps and what they mean for local SEO.
Device performance gaps occur when a page performs differently on mobile versus desktop. Since most local searches happen on mobile, a mobile performance gap is a significant issue. This guide covers how to analyze and address device gaps. See Reading Search Console Performance Reports for the data source.
Analyzing device performance
In Search Console, filter the Performance report by device. Compare impressions, clicks, CTR, and position across mobile, desktop, and tablet. A gap is significant when mobile CTR or position is notably worse than desktop for the same queries.
Common causes
| Cause | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Poor mobile usability | High mobile impressions, low CTR | Improve tap targets, font size, layout |
| Slow mobile load | High mobile impressions, high bounce | Optimize Core Web Vitals on mobile |
| Intrusive interstitials | Low mobile CTR | Remove or delay interstitials |
| Different content on mobile | Different position on mobile | Ensure mobile and desktop content match |
