Service Area Pages: When and How to Build Them
When service area pages help and how to build them without duplication.
Service-area pages describe where a business offers its services. For businesses that travel to customers (plumbers, electricians, landscapers), service-area pages help capture location-based queries. This guide covers when to build them and how to avoid duplication. See Location Pages vs. Service Pages for the cannibalization framework.
When service-area pages help
Service-area pages help when a business serves multiple cities or neighborhoods but does not have a physical storefront in each. They target queries like 'plumber in [city]' and connect the service to the location. Google's guidelines distinguish service-area businesses from storefront businesses.
How to build them
- Create one page per service area (city or region), not per zip code.
- Write unique content for each page — do not duplicate with the city name swapped.
- Include the services offered in that area, not just the location.
- Link to the relevant service pages and the main location page.
- Add LocalBusiness schema with areaServed.
